Sardinia: Saccargia Holy Trinity Basilica


After Alghero, we went inland a bit to look at the Saccargia Holy Trinity Basilica.

Just read that this Romanesque church was initially built in the early 11th century over the ruins of a monastery, and was run by (Camaldolese) Benedictine monks.

As can be clearly seen, the church is made up of lincredible ayers of black basalt and white limestone:


Below, I'm trying to capture a bit of the atmosphere inside the church starting with the ornate pulpit:

Tried to get shots of this wonderful building from as many angles as possible.  


Had to get a last shot of this magnificent building before getting back on the coach:


Just read that the building was abandoned in the 16th century and restored and reopened as a church much later in the early 20th century.
