Thomas Hardy's Wessex: The Crown Inn, Marnhull

The first thing we saw in Marnhull after our mid-morning stroll from Shaftesbury was the Crown Hotel, which is Thomas Hardy's model for the Pure Drop Inn in 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles'.

The Crown Hotel had an old-worldly feel to it:

And we had a lunchtime pint there, which was quite decent (as John Durbeyfield suggests in 'Tess').

It also seemed a bit upper-crust (not sure if John Durbeyfield would've approved).
