If I remember rightly, this dates back to the 13th century. Between 1999 and 2007, I used to work at an EFL school in Canterbury, and take all kinds of international (Italian, Spanish, Arab, Japanese etc.) students on a 'Hidden Secrets' tour of Canterbury. The aim was to go beyond boundaries showing the students some of the beautiful hidden places in Canterbury that they'd normally miss. Quite naturally, many of the students questioned why such places as the Old Norman Staircase were 'off limits'.
