The Blasket Islands and the Crucifix


It became too foggy to see our intended destination, Slea Head, but we did get to see the Blasket Islands in the distance (above).


Just read a quick summary about the Blasket Islands, and they sound fascinating.  An Irish-speaking population was evacuated from the Islands in 1953 due to a falling population and the harshness of life there.  One of my travelling companions spoke about Peig Sayers, who lived on one of the Blaskets, who wrote a famous book about life and folklore on the Blaskets.
