Thomas Hardy's Wessex: The Church of the Holy Rood, Wool

Before leaving Wool for Wareham, I had a quick look at the Church of the Holy Rood of which (I've just read on the Internet that) most of what is visible today is the result of the Victorian rebuilding and enlargement done by John Hicks of Dorchester between 1864 and 1866:

Have also just read that Hicks is commonly viewed as Dorset's best-known Victorian architect (arriving in Dorchester in 1850), while Thomas Hardy trained to be an architect under Hicks 1856-1860, and worked for him 1860-1862 and 1867-1869.  Thus, the Church of the Holy Rood seems to have been built while Hardy was away in London and/or focusing on the early stages of his writing career.
