As things turned out, the Almshouses in the town centre provided our last big focus in Taunton:
Have just read that the Gray's Almshouse site, a Grade I listed building, dates back to 1635, and is now made of seven flats; one guest suite; a small laundry room; and a communal garden.
Have also just discovered that the Almshouses were founded by a wealthy cloth merchant, Robert Gray, who came from Taunton; made his fortune in London; and has a surviving monument in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Taunton Minister).
Having now finished my kind of (cultural) journey from south-west England (briefly taking in south Wales) to north-west England, I'm currently enjoying reading about the history of some of the places that I encountered, such as Gray's Almshouses.
