After visiting The Inn at Whitewell, we stopped off at St. Hubert's Catholic church, Dunsop Bridge:
Have just read that the church was opened in 1865 by Richard Roskell, the Catholic Bishop of Nottingham back then.
Moreover, St. Hubert's church was built to the design of Edward Pugin who designed more than 100 Catholic churches, mainly in Britain but also further afield.
It is also said that St. Hubert's was built from the winnings of the racehorse, Kettledrum, owned by Colonel Charles Towneley of Towneley Hall, Burnley at the 1861 Epsom Derby.
In St. Hubert's churchyard, there are some interesting gravestones, especially the angel statue below:
One of my friends told me that the tomb with the angel was the Towneley Family Vault.
For me, the angel statue was the most distinct feature outside the church.
From a distance, it looked almost real.
Sadly, one of my friends predicted that in 10 years time, St. Hubert's church will have been converted into a restaurant. Let's hope not, of course.
