After visiting Sneem village, we visited Staigue Fort which was only about three miles away:
The place is an incredible achievement of dry-stone wall building, especially considering it is thought to have been built somewhere around the 3rd or 4th century AD:
Below, I'm peering out of one of the cave-type openings built into the fort wall:
Have just read that the fort was built as a defensive stronghold, probably for a local king or lord.
Had to be careful while walking around the top of the wall:
