Instead of getting to Kent from Dorset via London, we decided to do a more adventurous journey via Chichester (West Sussex) and East Croydon.
This way of doing things allowed us the possibility of a one-day stop off in Chichester:
To amongst other things, take in the wonderful Cathedral there:
However, the stop off in Chichester did not turn out as planned.
We did manage to reach Chichester with few hiccups, only having a 30-40 minute delay in Wool (Dorset) waiting for the train to Southampton, then it was straightforward Sussex bound.
At Chichester Tourist Information Office, the stop-off started to turn pear-shape, as the good ladies there, while trying to help us, pointed us towards a coastal area called West Wittering as it had several campsites:
As can be seen, West Wittering was quite a scenic place, but the problem was that it was 6-8 miles outside Chichester, and the campsite we got on cost us 23-pound apiece for a one night stay.
Neither my friend or I had the strength or will to look for another campsite, so we accepted the extortionate price.
Anyway, four cans of Stowford Press cider on the beach did somewhat ease the pain.
A few signs warned that the beach's sandhill dunes were unsafe.
They were a bit soft and non-sturdy:
My friend kept mentioning that the Isle of Wight could be sometimes seen from West Wittering beach.
In the end, we sought shelter from the wind:
Before coming across a beautiful church on the way back to the campsite:
Which seems to have been the Church of St. Peter & St. Paul.
We had wanted to camp nearer to Chichester, to have a look inside the Cathedral and possibly visit Arundel (I visited this wonderful place while still a student in the late 1980s).
But West Wittering proved to be an okay place.
