By a nice stroke of luck, I actually got to see inside the church of St. George Reforne. After visiting Portland Bill, I caught a bus heading back for Weymouth, and, as if by magic, the bus passed St. George's:
The previous evening I'd visited St. George's but had been unable to get in, and had been worried about the prospect of leaving Portland without seeing inside the place.
Inside the church, an amiable old man informed me that when the church had been in more regular use, it had been low church, very much a "church of the Word" (a Bible-centred church) as he put it.
It was really nice to see English flags (containing the cross of St. George, of course) inside the church:
