Got out to see The Residents doing their 'Wonder of Weird' (40th Anniversary) set at Warsaw Basen last night. This was my first time at Warsaw Basen, a nightclub designed like some kind of swimming pool.
As expected, The Residents did an excellent set chosen from their vast catalogue of work over the years, as ever, the tunes being introduced with rant-type stories from the vocalist, 'Randy'. Really loved the way the stage was set up with an inflated Father Christmas and Snowman despite knowing that this would be so hrough watching Youtube videos of the 'Wonder of Weird' tour:
Really appreciate that somebody filmed the 30 minutes + of The Residents' show from New York and very kindly put it on Youtube, as this helped me 'to get into the groove' for the Warsaw show. In all, the band did a 2-hour plus set with the above material being done in the 30 minutes or so leading up to the encores.
Yes, I've said it before, the old bands are the best, as they've got the back catalogues to do great sets, and celebrate their longevity like The Residents did last night:
Finally, it was great to see the band's 'eyeball plus top hat' motif materialise (on top of an inflatable structure) during the encores.
First came across The Residents in the early 1980s when they were regularly on the front cover of British music magazines, especially Sounds, and it was good to catch up with them at Warsaw Basen last night (I'd only seen them once before at Warsaw Stodoła about five years ago). Like I've probably said before, the old bands give some much needed kind of continuity to life.
