Arriving in Rye (Sussex)

After a couple of hours journey down from Canterbury, we found ourselves in Rye (East Sussex), and quickly at the waterfront:

Have just read that Rye is a small town with a population of about 5,000, which lies two miles from the Sea, at the junction of the Rivers Rother, Tillingham, and Brede.

Have also just discovered that in Medieval times, Rye was an incredibly important port, being almost fully surrounded by the Sea.

During such times, Rye was famous for providing ships to the English Crown and smuggling.

Couldn't help but question if the tall buildings above had once been involved in shipbuilding, or had just been built with a shipbuilding ethos or aesthetic in mind.
