Wordsworth's Old Grammar School

The notice below shows that Wordsworth attended the Old Grammar School in the centre of Hawkshead between 1779 and 1987, between 9 and 17 years old:

Have just read that Hawkshead Grammar School was founded in 1585 by the Archbishop of York, Edwin Sandys, upon the instruction of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603).

Have also discovered that the Grammar School closed in the early 20th century, but the building still functions as a Museum housing historical items related to the School.

For example, the ground floor classroom still contains many old desks covered in carving done by the boys, including Wordsworth and his brother John.

The upstairs part of the Museum contains the Headmaster's Study and an exhibition covering such things as the history of the School and, of course, its star pupil, Wordsworth.

Have also just read that a guided tour of the School reveals why the boys were allowed to carve their names in their desks, and to smoke and drink beer at school.

Sounds like a guided tour of the School is well worth a visit.

Have just read that while Wordsworth attended the Grammar School, he lodged with Anne Tyson and her husband, a couple in their 60s, in Hawkshead village, and then at Colthouse, a hamlet half a mile from Hawkshead, where they moved in 1783.
