Father Popiełuszko's tomb lies in the St. Stanisław Kostki Catholic church grounds, near Plac Wilsona in Warsaw. Father Popiełuszko was a brave and popular Catholic priest who openly associated himself with the Solidarity movement, and was kidnapped and brutally murdered by three secret policeman of the Polish Communist/Socialist (whatever you want to call it) regime in 1984. In 2010, Father Popiełuszko was beatified, the last step before what now looks like an almost certainty of him becoming a Catholic saint.
I live very near to St. Stanisław Kostki church, so it has been interesting to observe the place, as I pass it almost on a daily basis. Below are some pictures of the church in the dark, when it is, for me, at its most silent and atmospheric.
During the day, the place can be crowded with pilgrims sometimes coming in coaches from all over Poland, but at night, the place is still and peaceful. A couple of official volunteers keep watch over Father Popiełuszko's tomb during the night, but they just gently walk away if anybody wants to pay their respects or get photos of the tomb.
When I got a few shots of Father Popiełuszko's tomb, it was gently lit up by a collection of candles burning in front of it.
For me, this place is a much better to visit during the darkness and stillness. It's easier to reflect on things then.
