A Paraguayan Folk Group and Dancers in Szczebrzeszyn in Eastern Poland

On a couple of occasions, I've shown a few pictures from when a Paraguayan folk group (and accompanying female dancers) did a concert in my wife's hometown of Szczebrzeszyn in eastern Poland about three years ago.  However, I've never shown the full set of pictures that I took that night, so here goes, all 30 or so of them!

The picture above shows the Paraguayan girls dancing with the Szczebrzeszyn locals.

The girl above waved the Paraguayan flag throughout the whole of the performance.

The shot below is my favourite as, even though it's just a close up of one girl, it seems to capture the atmosphere of the evening perfectly.

The audience was invited to put money into the flower pots near the end of a wonderful 2-hour plus performamce that was truly magnificent.

During the performance, all kinds of interesting dancing took place, and, of course, all of the girls were eye-catching.

In particular, the Paraguayan harp player was fantastic, and it was mentioned that he was famous back in his home country.

And finally, this is where it all took place in the old Jewish synagogue (now a local cultural centre) in Szczebrzeszyn.

  1. It must have been an amazing sight and cultural experience Pat? Would you like to visit South America?

  3. Probably Peru Pat where the potatoes come from. "If was an Inca". Neil Young song time again. Have a great Beach House concert tonight.

  4. Sometimes Neil Young gets it right e.g. 'I Am a Child', sometimes he gets it wrong e.g. 'Cortez the Killer'. Do you agree, Dave?

  5. I do agree with you Pat. Think a lot of famous musicians and bands produce some outstanding and some very average stuff.

  6. I was speaking about the ideas behind the lyrics, Dave e.g. 'Cortez The Killer' about the great Hernando Cortez who stopped powerful South American tribes from doing human sacrifice on less powerful tribes. And yet, despite 'Cortez The Killer' being a crass polemic, 'I Am a Child' is genuinely sublime.

  7. Sorry about the crossed wires Pat. I had never even heard of Hernando Cortez until I just Googled him. So I take it from you he was indeed great!

  8. The PC crew have accused Cortez and the Spaniards of slaughtering the larger South American tribes when it was mainly diseases such as smallpox and smaller South American tribes enacting revenge for previous atrocities (e.g. human sacrifice)against them which ravaged the previously dominant South American tribes. Admittedly, the Spaniards brought European diseases with them to South America, but they can hardly be accused of doing this intentionally (although with the PC mob nothing would surprise me)

A great Australian historian called Keith Windschuttle has written about this, and other forms of PC historical revisionism.
