New Day Festival 2022: Day Three

On day three, we got down to Canterbury Wetherspoons especially early so that we could get back in time to see Gryphon who were on early on the main stage:

The man who'd told me he'd seen Jethro Tull 257 times (a truly amazing feat, it must be said), informed me that he'd been waiting for 40-50 years to see Gryphon.

As might be expected, Gryphon's mellow and eclectic style was perfect for Sunday morning/early afternoon.

Towards the end of many of the bands that we saw at New Day, my friend and I retired back to the campsite to swig a can of ale or two, as we didn't fancy the five-pound a pint beer on site.

Later in the afternoon, we caught Blackbeard's Tea Party who got the crowd revved up with shanty songs:

And even a humorous take on the classic Charlie Daniels song, renamed as The Devil Went Down To Yorkshire.

And the highlight of Sunday, and possibly the whole festival, for me was Southern Boogie band, Skinny Molly:

Having seen Blackfoot at Castle Donington back in 1981, I knew that Southern Boogie bands are tailor-made for festivals, and Skinny Molly were great.

Doing the Free classic Wishing Well; Steve Earle signature tune Copperhead Road; Lynyrd Skynyrd classic Sweet Home Alabama etc.

And of course, the band were always going to round things off with the Skynyrd epic, Freebird.

Having seen Mike Estes, a brilliant front-man, with Blackfoot at Manchester Academy 3 about 10-11 years ago, I always knew that Skinny Molly would serve up a treat, and so they did.

Have now seen Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and Skinny Molly do Freebird, and the latter's version was right up there, the crowd loved it.

After Skinny Molly, Atomic Rooster looked good. But I was up at 4.30 the next morning for a dreaded trek by coach up north to Manchester and eventually my hometown, Bury.
