Walking Round the Great Blasket Island

Before setting up our tents above the Strand (beach facing the mainland) on the Great Blasket Island

I decided to take a few mile walk around mainly the coastline of the island to see if there was anywhere else good for camping on the island.

During the walk, I encountered several gorges and drops which looked rather dangerous:

And could see the smaller Blasket Island in the distance:

One gorge in particular provided a wonderful view of one of the Skellig Islands in the distance:

This view of one of the Skelligs caught my attention for quite a while (would love to know if it was Skellig Michael or not).

As I love the song Skellig by Clannad.

Round the back-side of the Great Blasket Island, it was a lot less windy,

And the sea looked a lot calmer:

Things were generally a lot less picturesque round the back-side, although the mainland did dramatically come back into view as shown above.

But it was good to turn the corner and be back on the front of the island, with its more gorgeous views:

And the Strand came gloriously back into view:

After my two-hour walk, it was clear that above the Strand was the best place to camp, as proved to be the case ...
