This picture shows the pit where the dead gladiator bodies were thrown. This was a scorching hot day, but the old gladiator ring/stadium was shrouded in trees, providing welcome relief from the blazing sunlight. This tree covering added to the atmosphere of the place, giving it a more definite presence.
