For me, the back of Fourth Avenue, then up Castle Hill Road, that is the gateway to Birtle:
In Birtle itself, you're greeted by the Church Inn pub:
Think I've read somewhere that this place may be haunted.
Used to go to the Church Inn every Sunday evening for a few beers and a club sandwich many years ago when Terry had it.
Just across the road from the Church Inn is the Church of St. John the Baptist:
Hope that the church is still up and running, it seems to be.
Just before Birtle church, there's a path to the Quarry:
But it's now a bit like a maze getting through to the Quarry.
At the other end of the Quarry, a country path takes you up to the leafy remains of a Methodist church:
Not far away is the old policeman's lodge:
Legend has it that one of the Wesley brothers preached on the stone perch above the lodge. Haven't got a clue whether this is true or not.
A country path from the old policeman's lodge leads you to the Pack Horse pub, another place that I frequented on a Sunday evening many moons ago:
The Pack Horse has always done a (more than) decent pint of John Willy Lees:
The pale ale above went down a treat.
From the Pack Horse, you can either follow the road up towards Deeply Vale, or cut across the fields to Ashy Valley.
The opening below leads down into Ashy Valley:
Where I saw quite a few people doing survival training:
Not a bad idea given the situation in the world today.
