For me, St. James' church blended in perfectly with all the surrounding beauty.Have just read that an original chapel in Buttermere was consecrated in 1507, while the present building only dates back to 1840 and was restored in 1930.
The church also seems to be popular with sheep who are always seeking shelter there:
And the church contains a wrought iron Shepherd's Gate at the entrance:
Which looks out to the beauty of the surrounding hills.
And I saw that even one of the pew kneelers kind of honoured the sheep who visited the church:
Thus, all in all, I could sense why Wordsworth is said to have been so deeply touched by the Buttermere chapel.
