From our campsite in the North Lakes, we went to the small, picturesque market town of Penrith for a couple of pints and a bite to eat.
Soon, it became clear that there were many wonderful, red sandstone buildings (Penrith kind of reminded me of Devon in this way).
Have just read that the George Hotel below dates back to the early 18th century:
While St. Andrew's church (below) has a tower that goes back to the 12th or 13th century:
The tourist information building (below) wasn't made of red brick but was still very pleasing to the eye:
Have just discovered that as a market town with a population of about 15,000, Penrith has 190 listed buildings on the National Heritage List for England. That's quite some going, I think.
