From our perched position above the Great Blasket Island Strand (beach facing the mainland), we soon became aware of a seal colony swimming around.
The seals seemed to be swimming in tactical fishing formation, with their heads bobbing in and out of the water:
And the surrounding scenery was truly spectacular:
The main show started at sundown when a bull seal came on to the beach and started calling the rest of the colony to join him there:
It was amazing to observe: after two hours, a few hundred seals were on the beach, and by midnight, approaching a thousand, all singing together in a kind of beautiful chorus.
From our non-obtrusive position above the Strand, we watched all the action with a decent German Pilsner:
It was a wonderful experience, never to be forgotten.
