We did intend to spend a night at Bassenthwaite village, but a quick look at Bassenthwaite Lake showed that the weather was too dark, wet, and gloomy for such a venture.
Looking at the pictures now, the Lake seems to have some kind of dark Gothic nobility, but at the time, we just didn't feel like setting up camp in damp conditions:
Have just read that Bassenthwaite Lake is one of the largest bodies of water in the Lake District, being about four miles long and three quarters of a mile wide, with the water being quite shallow.
Bassenthwaite Lake is also known for lying at the foot of Skiddaw, with the latter dominating the skyline in the Northern Lakes. But, with the foggy and overcast conditions, we didn't really get a good view of Skiddaw.
Can remember passing Bassenthwaite Lake as a young teenager many years ago, on the way back from a family holiday up to Scotland, and the Lake had been dark and murky back then. Maybe I'll catch it on a clear day some time.
